Artists from North Rhine-Westphalia in dialogue with works from the Hentrich Glass Museum
ends 7 March 2010

20 artists, creating 24 works, used the entire spectrum of the history of glass art from its beginnings in the second millennium B.C. until the end of the 20th century as a source of inspiration for engaging artistically with the works from the Glass Museum.

GROSSE KUNSTAUSSTELLUNG NRW
20 February 2010 – 14 March 2010

The art exhibition ’Grosse Kunstausstellung NRW Düsseldorf’ steeped in tradition provides differentiated insights into the Düsseldorf and North Rhine-Westphalian art scene. As a non-curated exhibition it is conceived by artists for artists, presenting both known and new works. Although the individual works are available for sale, the exhibition is not intended as a mirror image of the art market: With the support of a jury composed of prominent figures, new and established positions are given a forum for dialogue and discussion.

FROM MURANO TO MEMPHIS.
Italian Glass from the holdings of the Hentrich Glass Museum
27 March 2010 – 27 June 2010

For many centuries Venice formed the heart of glass art in Europe. Even the impact of Modernism in the 1920s was founded on this glorious past.
Characteristic of the best works of modern Venetian glass art was the high perfection of the glass blowing art, the clear, confident design and a wealth of design techniques. Stimulus from the Milanese designer group Memphis founded in 1981 ensured the continuation of the long-standing success of Venetian glass art.

POLLOCK TO SCHUMACHER
Le grand geste!
10 April 2010 – 1 August 2010

1959 and documenta 2 in Kassel marked the climax of gestural abstract painting. 50 years later, our exhibition of international dimensions retraces this development, placing emphasis on the three centres Paris, New York and Düsseldorf. Works by painters from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and other countries complement the exhibition and demonstrate the considerable worldwide popularity of informal painting in the 1950s.

A bluish silvery scent of distant lands - Schirmer in Italy
24 April 2010 – 29 August 2010

In 19th-century landscape painting plein air studies have been acquiring seminal significance. In Schirmer’s oeuvre they can be regarded as a peak of his artistic development. For the first time, all studies of his Arcadian landscape from the museum’s own holdings will be presented jointly with further public and private collections. The show is complemented by paintings and drawings by Schirmer, but also by his contemporaries, such as August Lucas, Ernst Fries or Ernst Willers.
The exhibition is part of the cooperative project SCHIRMER 2010: Johann Wilhelm Schirmer - from the Rhineland into the world.
