Idea, concept and curatorship of the exhibition: Dr. Bettina Baumgärtel

The year 2008 sees Düsseldorf’ celebrating its ‘Jan Wellem Jubilee’ – this being the 350th anniversary of the birth of Johann Wilhelm (popularly Jan Wellem), Elector Palatine (1658 – 1716). museum kunst palast is contributing to the programme of anniversary events at his electoral seat with an exhibition entitled, ‘Himmlisch-Herrlich-Höfisch’ .
The works that remain in the museum’s possession from the former Electoral collection, complemented by a selection of high-calibre loans, form the point of departure of the show; but surely its centrepiece is the monumental painting of the Assumption of the Virgin by Peter Paul Rubens, on permanent loan from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. It represents the most eminent single legacy of the celebrated, semi-public Picture Gallery that Johann Wilhelm maintained at Düsseldorf.
